Chicago Events: How to Find What's On and Who to Go With
October 20, 2026 · 6 min read

the short answer
Start with the City of Chicago's DCASE calendar and the Choose Chicago events page, which you can filter by date and neighborhood, then check a venue's own calendar. Around those sit the yearly regulars: Blues Fest in June, Taste of Chicago in July, the Jazz Festival on Labor Day weekend and the tree lighting in November.
Chicago always has something on: a festival in Grant Park, a band at a neighborhood club, a talk at the Cultural Center, a parade on Michigan Avenue. The tricky part is knowing where to look, and turning "that sounds fun" into a plan you can actually suggest to someone.
This guide covers both. First, the official calendars worth bookmarking for events in Chicago this weekend. Then the big events that come back every year, with the dates the organizers published for 2026, so you know roughly when each one lands. No made-up listings: everything here comes from the City of Chicago, Choose Chicago or the event's own site.
Where do you find Chicago events?
Start with two official calendars, then go to the venue:
- The City of Chicago's DCASE calendar for city-run events, from Millennium Park to the Chicago Cultural Center.
- Choose Chicago's events page for a wider view, with filters for "this weekend", category and neighborhood.
- A venue's own calendar for exact times, prices and age rules before you go.
The rest of this guide is the yearly rhythm those calendars follow, and a few easy ways to make a plan out of it.

The calendars worth bookmarking
DCASE calendar of events
Neighborhood: citywide · Cost: set by each event · When: updated year-round
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) runs the city's big festivals and the programming at Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural Center, and its calendar lists them in one place. You can switch between calendar, list and map views. Tip: the Cultural Center's fall and winter season runs exhibitions, film screenings and live music, an easy weekday plan downtown with a friend.
Choose Chicago events
Neighborhood: citywide, filterable · Cost: set by each event · When: updated year-round
Choose Chicago, the city's tourism office, keeps an events page with quick filters for today, this weekend, next week and next month. You can narrow it by category (music and comedy, museums, sports, theatre, festivals) and by neighborhood, from Albany Park to Wrigleyville. It's the fastest way to answer "what's on near me on Saturday?"
Chicago Park District
Neighborhood: parks citywide · Cost: set by each event · When: see the Park District's calendar
The Park District's Night Out in the Parks series brings theater, music, movies, dance and nature programs to parks across the city, with about 100 local artists and organizations taking part. Check the Park District's site for what's coming up near you: a concert or a film in a park a few blocks from home is about the easiest event plan there is.
Venue calendars
Once you've found something, check the venue's own page. Music clubs, theaters and museums post exact times, prices and age limits, which can change show by show.

The yearly calendar of big Chicago events
Most of these come back around the same time each year. The dates below are the 2026 ones the organizers published; check each site for next year's.
Spring and early summer
- St. Patrick's Day parade and river dyeing (downtown): in 2026, both were on Saturday, March 14, with the South Side Irish and Northwest Side Irish parades on Sunday, March 15.
- Chicago Blues Festival: the city calls it the largest free blues festival in the world. In 2026 it opened June 4 at the Ramova Theatre in Bridgeport, then ran June 5 to 7 in Millennium Park.
- Chicago Pride: in 2026, Pride Fest ran June 20 and 21 and the Pride Parade was Sunday, June 28.
High summer
- Taste of Chicago (Grant Park): five days of food and music, held July 8 to 12 in 2026, with SummerDance programming on site.
- Chicago Gospel Music Festival (Millennium Park): two days, July 24 and 25 in 2026.
- Lollapalooza (Grant Park): July 30 to August 2 in 2026.
- Chicago Air and Water Show: viewed along the lakefront from Fullerton to Oak Street, with North Avenue Beach at the center. In 2026 it was August 15 and 16.
- Chicago House Music Festival and Conference: four days in the city where house music was born, August 27 to 30 in 2026, with a closing celebration on the Riverwalk.
Fall and the holidays
- Chicago Jazz Festival: a Labor Day weekend tradition for more than 40 years. In 2026 it ran September 3 to 6.
- World Music Festival Chicago: ten days at venues across the city, September 25 to October 4 in 2026.
- Chicago Marathon: October 11 in 2026. The race site lists October 10, 2027 for the next one.
- Christmas Tree Lighting (Millennium Park): usually the Friday before Thanksgiving. In 2026 it's Friday, November 20, with festivities from 4pm and the lighting at about 6:30pm, and the tree stays lit through January 10, 2027. A Holiday Market with more than 40 local vendors fills the North Promenade over opening weekend.
- Magnificent Mile Lights Festival: usually the Saturday before Thanksgiving. In 2026 it's Saturday, November 21, with the parade heading south from Oak Street at 5:30pm and fireworks over the river at 7:30pm.
For the rest of the season, our guide to things to do in Chicago in December picks up where this list ends.
A few things to plan around
- Big festivals fill the trains. Taste, Lollapalooza and the Air and Water Show draw huge crowds, so agree on a meeting spot before you go.
- Lineups come late. The city usually announces festival lineups weeks ahead. Check the DCASE news page before you make a plan around one act.
- Street closures. Parades and the Lights Festival close streets well before they start; the Lights Festival notes closures can begin as early as 3pm.
- Free to enter isn't the same as no spending. Many city festivals don't charge to get in, but food, drinks and some seating are paid.

Three easy plans to suggest
You don't need to commit to a whole festival. Pick one:
- One set, then dinner. Pick a single act at Blues Fest or the Jazz Festival, listen on the lawn, and walk somewhere nearby to eat after.
- The tree and a warm drink. Meet at Millennium Park on lighting night, or any evening while the tree is up, then find somewhere warm nearby to talk.
- A Saturday-morning calendar check. Open the Choose Chicago "this weekend" filter, choose your neighborhood, and send one thing to someone who'd enjoy it.
If nothing on the calendar fits, our guide to easy things to do in Chicago this weekend has smaller plans.
Make it a plan with someone nearby
Festivals and shows are easy to share: one set on the lawn, a parade, a night at the Cultural Center. Lighthouse is a social app for meeting people nearby who share your interests. You can see who's around and what you have in common, start an activity for the event you have in mind, or join one someone in your neighborhood has posted. Each activity has its own group chat, so you can agree on a time and a place to meet in the crowd.

Good to know
- Check before you go: dates, lineups and locations change, and some 2027 dates aren't announced yet. That goes for anything in this post, too. Each listing links to its official source below.
- Getting there: Grant Park and Millennium Park are a short walk from most 'L' lines in the Loop, which beats parking on a festival day.
- Ages and bags: big festivals and music venues set their own age and bag rules. Read the event's visitor policy first.
